8.5.5 - Multiple Toughness Characteristics in a Target Unit

Core Rules, p. 24

If a target unit would have more than one Toughness characteristic present, either from some kind of special rule, multiple models in a unit or being a combined unit, when rolling to wound, the wound roll is made against the majority Toughness characteristic of the unit. If there is no clear majority, use the highest Toughness characteristic present.

Multiple Characteristics for tests: There are numerous instances of some models in a unit having different characteristics from other models in their unit. There are various examples of characteristic tests. These tests involve rolling a D6 and comparing to a characteristic to determine success (example see Hit & Run special rule). Where you would make a singular test with multiple characteristics present for a whole unit, make a single test against the best characteristic in the affected unit. Example; if a unit makes an Initiative test and half the models have Initiative 4, one model has Initiative 5 and an attached model part of the unit has Initiative 6, you roll against the Initiative 6 characteristic to determine success. If a test would specify that it is to be made against each individual model, you must make a dice roll for the test based on each individual's Initiative characteristic instead.
