9.1 - Allocating Wounds

Core Rules, p. 25

Wounds are allocated to models in a unit 1 wound at a time. You can allocate wounds caused to your unit as you see fit. However, once you have allocated a wound to a model, you cannot allocate wounds to other models in the unit until that model is slain (see 9.2), except for attached Character units. If a unit with the Character special rule is attached and visible, you may resolve wounds against the Character or attached unit. However, for the purposes of allocating wounds to models already having taken wounds, attached units do not count.

The only exception to this rule is where wounds have been inflicted to multiple individual models via effects such as the Gets Hot! Special rule. These wounds are assigned to their model that suffered the effect. All other wounds not inflicted to specific models via effects must be assigned as normal and models that suffered wounds via effects must have future wounds suffered allocated to them first following the standard rules for allocating wounds.

If a unit is destroyed, all wounds that remain to be allocated to the unit are negated and have no effect. Wounds can only be allocated to models that are visible to the unit that is attacking them unless the weapon that inflicted those wounds has the Blast or Large Blast or Indirect Fire special rules. If there are no models in the target unit that are visible to the attacker, all remaining wounds are negated.

Wounds caused by Spray weapons may only be allocated to models that are within range of the weapon with the Spray special rule.
